Buying Limited Edition Seeds
When you buy a stock of seeds or cuttings from your garden, you might get surprised when you get to see the number of limited edition seeds that are available in that stock. The limited edition label is normally applied to an annual event such as a flower. Such annuals items are usually explicitly marked as being a limited edition. Limited edition items may be annual flowers, shrubs, plants, decorations, buildings, or even sports and fuels.
You should be wary of buying any stock of limited edition seeds or cuttings if it is not on sale. If you see a sale on that product and you have no intention of growing it or saving it for later, dump it immediately. You are losing money that you could easily save by keeping the plant in the ground to come.
Some annuals make great starter plants or houseplants because they are easy to grow from cuttings. Cuttings taken from seedlings planted in the same garden can produce new flowers, even after years of separation. You don’t need to wait for years before you can start flowering your cuttings. So it is quite possible for you to grow your starter plants from cuttings.
Of course, if you want to preserve a limited edition item, you should be careful. You should never try to save a limited edition item in a moist environment, as the roots may rot if they are kept out of dampness. It might be possible for you to buy a container that has some protection over the base so that the item can be kept in a protected environment, but that will depend on the size of your purchase and the variety of seeds that are included in the set. You can also buy special glass jars or totes to put your limited edition seeds in.
It is best to buy your limited edition seeds from a local nursery if you are interested in preserving them for later years. You should purchase the seeds from the nursery, you are going to use. Some companies do have a small selection of seeds that are available from different seasons or planting periods in the year. These are not generally available from nationwide retailers, but you can buy them from an online retailer and have them shipped directly to your home.
Once you have chosen which seeds you want to plant, make sure that you read the description carefully. Some varieties are more difficult to grow than others, depending on their needs. Look for information about the type of climate the plant will be most comfortable with. Remember, some plants cannot handle cold weather and can freeze their roots. You also want to be sure that the seeds you get will germinate and grow roots quickly.
If you do find seed packets for limited edition items, you will want to follow the directions carefully to germinate the seeds. This can sometimes be tricky, since not all seeds germinate the same. For instance, one packet may tell you to leave the seeds in a dark windowless container for twelve weeks and then replant the cuttings. Other packets might indicate that you need to water the soil before planting, but you have to make sure that the water is not turned away from the roots because this could cause root rot.
After your plants have had time to set up, you should check them regularly for signs of leaves or growth. You will want to see if they are growing properly and if you see any damage on the underside of leaves. Cuttings that are not growing may also need to be picked up. Packaging the cuttings and seeds separately are helpful in ensuring that they are protected until they have a chance to sprout. This will help ensure that your limited edition plants will have an abundant start to their growing season.
