How to Take Care of Limited Edition Seeds
If you’ve bought some limited edition seeds recently, then chances are that you might still have them. I know I do because I bought one of my favourite varieties when I saw it was on sale. My friend chose a beautiful fragrance and gave me some seeds to plant. What follows is a brief article on how to get your hands on limited edition seeds.
When you buy limited edition seeds, they don’t come with any seeds. You will need to identify which seeds your plants need. It might be easier if the seeds are still in the container, but that’s not always possible. Some gardeners find it very difficult to identify which varieties need to be planted. If that’s the case, look for a label that indicates what the plants should grow in.
As I said, some seeds are included so you don’t necessarily need to buy the whole lot. Ask the retailer if you can buy just a few varieties. This will probably work out much cheaper than buying all of the seeds. Even though I only managed to plant two varieties this time, I’m sure I’ll be able to manage more in future. The important thing is that you do get the seeds you need so that you can at least start plants growing.
Once you’ve identified which seeds you need, go online and check out the prices. It can be surprising at the difference between standard seeds and limited edition varieties. There’s no real trade off other than you will have to pay for the seeds you buy. It doesn’t make much difference if they’re in smaller quantities or larger ones; they both produce good quality plants. If you plant seeds with the right amount of care they can produce flowers that are fragrant, attractive and healthy.
Once you’ve identified your limited edition varieties, you should start looking at plants that you want to grow. Choose herbs and vegetables that you know are versatile and easy to grow in your garden. You could even plant herbs in your flower bed. If you can select seeds that have some type of known beneficial trait, it might be worth it to plant them.
Plant seeds in the spaces between your existing plants. Try to spread them as wide as possible. You don’t have to get them as deep as you can because the roots will need room to spread. Once your limited edition varieties have had a chance to grow and settle, they will produce flowers for you to enjoy.
Don’t be surprised if your plants don’t survive the first year. New plants grow at a much faster rate than seeds from established trees and shrubs. Just remember that your limited edition variety was selected for a reason and it may not be quite as good as it could have been if you had chosen some other species. Just keep trying and improving plant health and you’ll be rewarded.
Make sure you are also providing the right nutrition for your limited edition crops. This means you need to make sure you are getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, if you are feeding them from seeds. Try and provide your plants with some of the same things they would naturally eat in their natural environment. This means buying organic produce where possible and avoiding pesticides whenever possible.
When you buy your limited edition seeds you should always get some great advice on plant care. Most suppliers will stock a wide range of information, so get advice from a specialist before buying your seeds. Remember, your limited edition seeds won’t fetch you as much money as traditional flowers. Don’t be fooled into thinking they’ll be better for your garden. You still need to give them the basics in regards to plant health and you’ll need to continue to look after them if you want them to grow to their full potential.
Don’t be tempted to over-fertilise your seeds. They won’t do any harm, but they won’t be as easy to harvest as regular seeds. Some plants can actually reduce the amount of time it takes for them to grow if they are over-fertilised. Over-fertilising your limited edition seeds will encourage the growth of weeds and poor growth conditions.
Don’t be tempted to leave your limited edition seeds outside. Even though they may not bloom for a couple of years you want to be sure you keep an eye on them. If you take them out of the ground too soon they could die or have a poor flavour. If you don’t take them out of the ground for long enough they may wilt and start to decompose. If you do need to leave them out they should be kept in a cool, dark place.
