Regular cannabis seeds have endless possibilities for cultivators to experiment with. At first, in Sensi Seeds and the North American cannabis seed market, a normal seed was simply a normal seed. Today, use the word regular cannabis seeds interchangeably with autoflowering or feminized cannabis seeds. They are both used to describe a cannabis plant that has been crossed with other cannabis plants, usually feminized or crossbred, in order to create a new breed.
The majority of hybrid cannabis is created by combining two or more naturally occurring marijuana plants. Crossbreeding allows an individual or hybrid farmer to manipulate the characteristics of the plant, resulting in completely different traits. Crossbreeding can take place on nearly any part of the plant‘s anatomy, including the bud, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seeds, roots, twig and leaves. Some common hybrid varieties include Lemon Herb, Cheese, Diesel, Lemon Haze, Purple Haze, French Creme and many more. When a crossbreed cannabis reaches maturity, it is called regular cannabis seeds, because it still contains the characteristics of its parents.
Autoflowering or feminized seeds are created by crossing a cannabis plant with an autoflowering or flowering herb. In early history, crossbreeding occurred by accident, when farmers found that a plant with similar flowering traits, such as lemon grass, grew better than others when it was crossed with another herb with flowering capabilities. Since the cannabis plant only produces one set of leaves during the flowering phase of the plant, and only two flowers at the end of the summer growth season, it was necessary to cross a plant to produce the desired second pair of leaves. This technique allowed for crossbreeding, which resulted in the creation of feminized or autoflowering herbs.
Autoflowering or feminized seeds can be crossed with a favorite herb to create a new strain with desirable characteristics. There are many popular herbs used in feminization projects. Some examples are Lemon Grass, Cheese, Diesel, Lavender and others. Crossbreeding different combinations of these popular herbs results in a very consistent and beautiful plant, which can be used for growing indoors. When feminized or autoflowering seeds are crossed with a dominant plant, they are referred to as feminized or autoflowering strains. When a new variety is created by crossing two regular cannabis seeds with a herb, it is called a feminized seed.
Autoflowering or feminized plants result from crossbreeding with a dominating species. Some examples are the famous Bluebird cannabis strain, which is a cross between Blue River indica and Saint Paulus. In Canada, there are two popular hybrid strains: Lowry and Haze. These popular strains were created when a Canadian farmer crossed a Saint Paulus with a Lowry.
Some breeds of hybrid cannabis are intended to produce high amounts of psychoactive THC. Many times breeders will select a popular strain known for its high THC content and then bred it with a regular cannabis strain that produces a low amount of THC. Examples include the Canadian strains Lemon Grass and Haze. Many times breeders will cross a regular cannabis with a weed with a high amount of THC and then produce a ” THC-infused ” strains. Crossbreeding with other high CBD producing flowers such as Lemon Grass yields a crop that has a low amount of THC but a high CBD level.
All of the above examples of crossbreeding stem from specific feminization goals. Some are designed to increase the amount of THC in the cannabis flower or to produce a high CBD flower. Some are meant to increase the potency of the original cannabis strain. No matter what the reason for crossbreeding, most commonly the end result is a high quality cannabis with a noticeably different taste from its parents.
But feminized cannabis seed feminization isn’t the only type out there. Sensi seeds are often used in indoor growing systems. These sensi seeds are mated with regular cannabis seeds so that when the plant is harvested, the plant has the same proportions of CBD and THC as the parent plant. Some people use feminized seeds for growing their own organic plants. Whatever your intentions for your feminized seeds, you’re sure to find something you love when it comes to growing pot.
