CrossCannabinoid Plants: How to Get the Best Marijuana Seeds
Regular cannabis seeds are completely free from human interference. They are sowing straight from marijuana plants. Every time you plant them, you are taking a risk. There is an even greater risk that they will grow up to be flowering males or pollen producing females. So, if they produce less THC – richer flowers, why the point of cultivating regular seeds?
There are two ways to increase the likelihood of regular seeds yielding quality females. Either breed for feminization (hence the term feminized) or crossbreeding. Crossbreeding involves two strains which are bred to produce the desirable trait. This increases the probability of the desired trait being passed on. Crossbreeding also tends towards uniformity of the end result because of the same strain breeding.
When the goal is simply to crossbreed to create feminized plants then feminization is more advantageous. However, not all farmers are interested in that. Some growers want to use their knowledge and experience to create better crops consistently. So they choose to breed and use autoflowering seeds instead.
Autoflowering seeds have their own set of advantages. First of all they are easier to obtain than regular cannabis seeds. Second of all they don’t need the assistance of a greenhouse. They can also be easier to cultivate than regular seeds as they don’t need to germinate in a special medium. This means that they can be grown directly from marijuana plants or inside a greenhouse (autoflowering).
But breeding for feminization has its own set of disadvantages. First of all, it is expensive. Crossbreeding with regular cannabis seeds takes time. And secondly, it involves laboratory conditions which are outside of most grower’s comfort zone. Genetics play a bigger role in producing great quality female plants.
The best way to produce feminized plants is through sexual cloning. Sexual cloning occurs when parents in separate generations are separated and allowed to mate. After the eggs have fertilized a female plant and the male plants begin to grow. As the plants develop, they will begin to produce female flowers and seeds. These plants are then ready to harvest.
However, sexual cloning isn’t practical for most farmers. Because the process requires both parents of the clones to pass a special gene to each generation, the cost of producing these plants can be prohibitive. This is one reason why breeding marijuana with regular cannabis seeds and mothers is popular. With this method, one generation is used to complete the task of producing mother plants while the next continues to use the mother plants to produce clones of the desired sex.
To begin your marijuana breeding venture, simply purchase regular seeds from a reputable retailer or grow shop. Then, begin the process of cross-fertilization. This is where you provide the appropriate nutrients to the parent plants so that they will develop the characteristics you are looking for. When the two different strains meet in the middle, you will have a cross-strain. Now you can grow and harvest using the desired sex of the plant!
Some methods exist that can assist you in cross-breeding cannabis seeds. The easiest is to collect a bud from each plant and put them together at the same time. The resulting mixture will form a strong hybrid. With feminized cannabis seeds, however, you will have a smaller chance of success. To crossbreed buds with regular cannabis seeds, you must collect a male and female only bud. This allows you to choose a cross between only two types of buds.
To start your marijuana breeding, collect three sets of three buds: one from each parent plant. Remove any large or broken parts on the buds to avoid having those pieces removed during the process. Place each plant into a small pot, making sure that the mother plant does not cover any of the others. Put the three plants in a dark area, but do not place them too close together so that the mother plants can take root.
After about six weeks of consistent, deep watering, remove the babies from their pots and place them into a pot full of sterilized soil. Gently water the new plants for about half an hour to make sure all the moisture is out of the soil. When the plants come up to mature, remove them from the pots and plant them into the grass. You should see new growth within a month or two. If you want to crossbreed regular cannabis seeds and feminized seeds, you should wait until after the young leaves are fully grown.
Crossbreeding cannabis with feminized or hybrid plants takes some special considerations. First, you must carefully remove any large or broken segments on the stems to avoid contaminating the new plants. If you do not remove large pieces, the new plant will be too large and it could end up breaking open during the pollination process. Crossbreeding cannabis with regular cannabis seeds may also prove problematic because of the small space required for the momma plants to grow in. Crossbreeding with hybrid and feminized seeds is much easier to accomplish than crossbreeding with regular cannabis seeds.
