Cultivating feminized cannabis seeds
If you are new to growing marijuana, you are probably wondering if you should buy regular seeds or feminized marijuana seeds. To answer this question, lets look at both sides of the argument. Regular seeds are available from many sources such as your local garden store or even online. Some are more potent than others and some are hybrid.
When you buy regular cannabis seeds, they are usually sold in single buds (also called Single Cut) or in a bun. Either way they will be small, approximately 50mm in diameter. Once they have been germinating for approximately 50 days, they are ready to be planted. Typically they are sold in single pieces but if you are buying online make sure you are getting them in bunches. Make sure they are also composted before use as compost tends to hold some nutrients.
When compared to feminised marijuana seeds, the best traits to look out for when purchasing this variety is the large number of chromosomes and the number of separate flowers that appear. When breeding, these buds will display many different flowers. Each flower will be completely different in shape, size and colour. Typically the best trait to look out for is a cross between two strains.
When trying to breed marijuana, it is important to know that regular cannabis seeds are designed to produce only one type of plant. When crossbreeding them with feminized ones, you are creating hybrid plants. Hybrids are a mixture of the best traits of one plant and any number of other plant species. Some examples of hybrid plants are Hyoscyamus-Cannabis, hybrids between Shasta and Jamaican Blueberry, and Lemon Hawaiian. Hybrid plants often display the best traits of all the parent plants, which makes crossbreeding them much easier.
Some growers have begun crossbreeding their regular cannabis seeds with autoflowering seeds. Autoflowering seeds are specially designed to make marijuana buds grow taller. Many growers believe that regular and feminized cannabis seeds will not grow as tall as autoflowering seeds. However, the record so far proves that autoflowering seeds do increase the height of buds.
To start crossbreeding your regular cannabis seeds with feminized ones, you will first need to buy the required feminized cannabis seeds. Crossbreeding your regular cannabis seeds with feminized ones is most successful when using female plants. The reason for this being is that male plants cannot produce viable seeds. You will then need to transfer the female plants from one container into another. Place the female plants in a large pot, add water and then set your incubator on top of the female plants.
Within a couple of weeks, you should begin to see the seeds begin to blossom. If the feminized ones are producing flowers, they are most likely not the regular cannabis seeds that you originally purchased. To ensure that your feminized ones produce regular flowers, transfer them into a large pot that is larger than your original purchase was. This way, you can let the plants take up as much room as they need without being crowded into a small space. Over time, your feminized ones will produce regular flowers.
Some growers believe that crossbreeding between regular cannabis seeds will create more powerful marijuana strains. They have discovered that some strains of marijuana have the ability to produce extra’THC'(tetrahydrocannabis) when crossed with other strains. Growers are able to control the strength of this effect by crossbreeding certain cannabis strains. In turn, these new strains have better and more potent potency. This is not to say that all feminized strains are highly potent. Only a small percentage of them are highly potent, but the stronger ones are available for hybridization between regular cannabis seeds and female plants.
