Cultivating Feminized Marijuana Seeds
Regular marijuana seeds are reproductive plant material which have been modified genetically to produce more desirable and healthy marijuana crops. When marijuana gets ready to breed, it replicates a specific number of chromosomes from each parent plant. It is one of nature’s most efficient means of creating new life forms.
When it comes to marijuana, feminized seeds are the way to go because they are able to make baby plants with each generation. You want to be careful when you buy marijuana seeds because some companies actually use regular marijuana seeds in their feminized seeds. The female plants are harvested, processed and packed at a plant nursery. After a few days, the pollen is removed and the feminized seeds are ready for planting.
The process works very well because’regular’ seeds which would result in a regular crop won’t grow to that size or produce that large of a yield if used as a breeding crop. So why would you want to go through all that trouble? There are a lot of benefits to genetically modified crops. One is that they can help control the amount of land needed for growing, resulting in smaller land packages for farmers. In other words, the farmers are able to produce a bigger crop using fewer acres.
Another advantage to breeding with male and female plants is that there is a lesser chance of an allergic reaction to either one. If a farmer does not have a cross between a male and female plant, the chances of an adverse reaction or damage from an herbicide to the female crop is much less. Since the pollen from a cross is used in producing a new generation, that new generation will be free of inheritable herbicide residue. The cross can also decrease the need for herbicides, thus lowering the overall herbicide use.
However, many people wonder how regular marijuana seeds become feminized. The answer lies in the way the marijuana plant develops its sex characteristics. The actual process happens at the very beginning of marijuana’s development. During the germination of the seeds from the female plants, some of the plant‘s tissues, including its own reproductive capabilities, are affected by the male chromosomes. This allows the plants to develop a secondary sex characteristic called a feminization.
There are two main ways that marijuana can be transformed into feminized seeds. The first involves genetic engineering. This is usually used to produce flowers or other plants that don’t normally grow as male plants would. It’s not unusual for breeders to seek out specific cannabis seed types to use when creating the feminized variety. There is also a technique that allows regular marijuana seeds to become feminized by crossing them with male plants. This often results in plants that don’t grow towards the end of the plant.
The second method is through the means of chemical modification. This is the method most often used to create feminized cannabis seeds. Chemical modification involves using certain “letters” within the genetic code in order to change the protein makeup of the seeds. In order to make this possible, it is common for experienced growers looking for feminized cannabis seeds to collaborate with certain organizations and entities involved with hemp and its breeding.
Experienced growers looking for feminized weed seeds will generally first start out with male cannabis plants. They then cross these plants with male plants that contain the necessary “letters” to change the genetic makeup. When cross-breeding various strains of cannabis plants, the results can be a feminized crop. For instance, if the desired result is to create feminized weed seeds, then the resulting plants would contain X chromosomes, instead of the more usual Y chromosomes. Crossbreeding can also increase the possibilities of getting other desirable traits, such as resistance to diseases and pests or higher tolerance to temperatures.
