This makes it perfect for coastal areas. Another variant of this species is the x orange f2 hybrid, which also produces a fertile orange flower set in purple and red flowers. The hybrid produces flowers that are almost black. This variety of the species is most ideal for tropical gardens.
In order to produce resinous buds or flowers, x critical seeds (sex plants) need to have feminized natures. This means that the females have had their sexual glands removed and have had all their pollen removed from the pistils. The result is that pollen is left behind which must be collected by hand to avoid over-harvesting and depleting the area.
All females that are found in the garden must be feminized. Collecting the pollen is not easy because it is in the bud and its scent can easily evaporate. Once collected, it must undergo a rigorous process of cleaning and air-drying to remove all traces of pollen. Only the finest resinous buds and flowers will bear the true aroma, making pollen collection extremely labour intensive. The best way to collect feminized pollen is to buy resinous buds from online seed catalogues. You will be able to collect your own feminized plants and complete your garden.
When feminized, the pollen will bear true aroma. However, there is also a risk of cross-contamination with other pollen from neighboring bushes, gardens or crops so care must be taken when collecting this pollen. Some feminized seeds (male plants) will have a fruitier aroma than the flowers. When purchasing resinous buds, it is best to buy them already prepared to allow for easier accumulation of the pollen.
