Regular Marijuana Seeds Vs Feminized Seeds
Regular marijuana seeds often have both X and Y DNA, meaning these regular marijuana seeds will grow into a male or female plant as well. For that reason, these regular marijuana seeds are often cheaper than feminized plants. Many growers purchase regular seeds just because they don’t plan on growing all the seeds to feminized pot-blended plants that are much more expensive. When buying marijuana seeds you must look at the gender of the plant to make sure that you are getting the right marijuana seed for your needs.
If you are growing only males, then you should find a supplier who offers only males. It is also important to check that the male plants are not listed as “stacked” because many females do bloom in the flowering stage. Some of these females are cross-bred with male plants to create new, unsexed plants, and the cross-breeding process can sometimes skew the percentages in favor of the females.
For indoor growing, you can use feminized marijuana seeds. These produce flowers similar to that of a regular marijuana flower. Since there is no cross-breeding, there is a better chance that the plants will start out weak and brittle, requiring more frequent watering. Unfortunately, the high cost of purchasing these feminized seeds from a reputable supplier often makes buying regular seeds too expensive for most indoor growing enthusiasts. However, growing marijuana using regular marijuana seeds produces buds that have a stronger aroma, contain more THC, and are much easier to control when they bloom.
Hybrid strains are another option for growing indoors. Although most strains are classified as indica or californica, there are some hybrid strains classified as californica, or what is known as Asian Haze. Some of these strains are the result of crosses between other cannabis plants and are considered highly potent. However, the low THC content in most hybrid strains make them very expensive.
Indoor growing of this type of weed is possible, but it requires a more elaborate environment than that of outdoor growing. First, the soil must be fertilized and prepared. You cannot simply use regular potting soil with this type of gardening because the male plants’ natural nitrogen-fixing capability is impaired. Therefore, you must purchase a product called soil that is specially designed to be acidic in order to fix the nitrogen. Then, you must cultivate the male plants only as directed by your supplier.
In addition, crossbreeding has significantly reduced the profitability of breeding cannabis with feminized seeds compared to traditional breeding. Male plants don’t grow as quickly as females. They also have weaker, shorter roots, making them more susceptible to root breakage and compensating with a slower growth rate. On top of that, genetic analysis of the male plants has revealed that they have a greater chance of inheriting an unfavorable trait from their mother. Crossbreeding decreases the likelihood of those disadvantages occurring.
It is possible to cultivate feminized cannabis seeds through breeding. But there are some significant challenges involved with this method. The plants have lower moisture requirements, so they are more suited to tropical regions where seasons of extreme heat may shorten the growing season. Also, they are not as tolerant to different temperatures and cannot tolerate extreme temperatures, so they are not viable for most greenhouse environments.
Hybrid seeds from regular marijuana seeds are easier to deal with. These strains have had years of development, so many of their desirable traits have been bred into the plants through natural selection. However, you will have to put in more work to achieve the intended results, which is higher quality buds. But with a little effort, you can save money by growing feminized plants, instead of using regular seed banks.
